Engineering Manager Opportunity

Bespoke Career Solutions is recruiting an experienced Engineering Manager to join a small, established engineering business.

This is a varied and hands-on position that combines engineering management, production planning, job estimating, customer service and general business administration. You will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of a small team of skilled machinists, ensuring work is planned effectively and completed accurately, efficiently and on time.

You will also manage the commercial and administrative side of customer jobs, from reviewing enquiries and producing quotations through to raising invoices, booking deliveries and following up overdue payments.

This role would suit someone with a strong engineering or manufacturing background who understands the demands of running a small engineering operation. You must be comfortable switching between managing workshop priorities, dealing with customers and completing essential administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering and Workshop Management

  • Managing the day-to-day workload of a small team of skilled machinists
  • Planning, prioritising and allocating work according to customer deadlines and available capacity
  • Providing clear job instructions and ensuring employees understand customer requirements
  • Monitoring the progress of work throughout the manufacturing process
  • Ensuring completed jobs meet the required drawings, specifications and quality standards
  • Identifying potential delays and taking action to keep production on schedule
  • Supporting machinists with technical, production and workflow issues
  • Managing urgent jobs and changes to customer requirements
  • Helping to maintain an organised, efficient and productive workshop
  • Ensuring machinery, tooling and workshop resources are used effectively
  • Promoting safe working practices and ensuring health and safety procedures are followed

Quoting and Job Estimating

  • Reviewing customer enquiries, drawings and technical requirements
  • Calculating expected machining, setting and production times
  • Estimating labour, material, tooling and subcontracting costs
  • Preparing accurate and commercially competitive customer quotations
  • Checking material availability and obtaining supplier prices where required
  • Considering workshop capacity and achievable lead times before confirming delivery dates
  • Following up quotations and responding to customer questions
  • Reviewing completed jobs against original estimates to help maintain profitable pricing

Customer and Supplier Coordination

  • Acting as a key point of contact for customers throughout the order process
  • Providing customers with accurate updates on job progress and expected completion dates
  • Managing customer queries, changes and urgent requirements professionally
  • Liaising with suppliers regarding materials, tooling and external services
  • Placing orders and monitoring expected delivery dates
  • Building positive working relationships with customers and suppliers

Administration and Financial Duties

  • Creating and maintaining job records, purchase orders and production paperwork
  • Raising customer invoices accurately and promptly
  • Checking that completed work, materials and additional charges are invoiced correctly
  • Monitoring outstanding accounts and contacting customers regarding overdue payments
  • Keeping accurate records of payment conversations and agreed actions
  • Supporting general bookkeeping and financial administration where required
  • Maintaining organised electronic and paper-based business records
  • Completing general correspondence, data entry and office administration

Deliveries and Goods In

  • Booking collections and deliveries with transport providers and couriers
  • Preparing the relevant paperwork for outgoing customer orders
  • Coordinating delivery dates with customers and production employees
  • Receiving incoming goods and checking quantities against delivery documentation
  • Inspecting materials and components for visible damage or discrepancies
  • Recording received goods and dealing with supplier issues where necessary
  • Ensuring materials and finished products are stored safely and correctly

Skills and Experience Required

  • Previous experience within an engineering or manufacturing environment is essential
  • Experience managing or supervising machinists, engineers or manufacturing employees
  • A practical understanding of machining and engineering processes
  • Experience planning workloads and managing competing production priorities
  • Ability to review engineering drawings and understand customer specifications
  • Experience quoting jobs and estimating labour, material and production costs
  • Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of job profitability
  • Confident dealing with customers, suppliers and transport providers
  • Comfortable raising invoices and following up overdue payments
  • Strong organisational, administrative and record-keeping skills
  • Good IT skills and confidence using standard office and business software
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • A flexible and hands-on approach suited to a small engineering business
  • CNC machining knowledge would be highly advantageous
